My Village Awakening Project

This program began in May 2008. It was designed to support the village people in Parigi Lama by providing them with home run industries. Some of the money raised from these bags will go to supporting the local schools of Parigi Village by providing books for classrooms and other resources which are needed to enhance education. By buying a bag you are supporting a cause.

These bags are 100 % environmentally friendly and guaranteed to last they are light weight and easy to carry as a souvenir. They are an alternative to a plastic bag and can be used again, and again each time you go shopping.

The materials used in these bags are collected by scavengers, school children and individual households.

The money raised from the sale of these bags supports scavengers, people in the local village area of Parigi Lama and benefit school children.

Hi my name is Emon, I’m 34years old. I’m married and have three children. I’m Indonesian and belong to the Betawi ethnic group. I was born and raised in Parigi Lama. I left school in year nine and began sewing when I was 16. I was interested in sewing and learnt from someone how to sew. I used to make pants, shirts, and jackets. In fact before the economic crisis of 1997 I had a very good business, I employed 10 people. But after the monetary crisis I found it hard to make ends meet. My business failed. Until recently I had very little money coming in. Now with the Village Awakening Project and G-litter I am making money, learning new skills and helping my environment. When I first began making bags from rubbish my neighbours laughed at me, but now they help me collect rubbish.
